There Is No Debate

There Is No DebateThere Is No DebateWhy staying on glaubenszeugnis is one of the most important things you can do during an interview.Regardless of which candidate flops or flies high tonight, theres no debate about it the best way for you to get ahead in your campaign for a better career is to mimic one of their most effective tricks.Pick three points and stick to them.Have you ever watched our candidates on TV? When the host asks them a real zinger of a question, youll notice they rarely get flustered. Instead, they reply right off the top of their heads with an answer that seems to be completely coherent and well-crafted.No matter what the question is, and no matter how aggressively or rudely asked, our candidates seem to have an answer ready at hand and they dont get distracted by the hosts badgering. I cant say whether thats good for us voters, but I can tell you its deadly effective for giving a great interview. Its called staying on message and they dont do it by accident.Befor e they go on TV, they write down (or have written down for them) talking points that make the key arguments they want to make. And whatever else happens, they make sure to get their talking points across. So in order to ace your interviews, youll want to have your own talking points. And heres the truly amazing thing - you dont even need to come up with them on your own. Unlike the fickle electorate, your target audience will tell you exactly what you need to say All you have to do is ask them. When you are setting up the interview, ask the recruiter or HR person What are the three key things youre looking for in this position? And why are they important to the company? (If youre not able to get this question in beforehand, you can still ask it right at the start of the interview.)They might say this position is for a new initiative, or this role is critical for the implementation of the strategy, or the boss needs an expert to help assist them in this area.Whatever the three key need s for the role are, write down beforehand how you can accomplish those needs. Dont over-practice, just make sure that you know their three needs by heart, and youve got a reasonable argument for why you can help them. Then during the interview, if conversation gets steered away to the still-new NFL season (go Bills please?), the snow coming this winter, or the latest Brangelina gossip, you just make sure that you steer it back to how you can contribute on those three key needs.Stay on message and when you walk out, your message will stay behind with your future boss.Good luck with moving up this weekIm rooting for you

How To Deal With Being Denied a Promotion or Raise

How To Deal With Being Denied a Promotion or RaiseHow To Deal With Being Denied a Promotion or Raise8 Proactive Steps to Take After Being Denied a Promotion or RaiseSeeking a promotion or raise is an important career step - though its often an intimidating one.Ideally, your manager will reward you with a promotion or raise when the time comes, but if that time has passed and youre left tapping your foot, maybe you should offer them a little nudge. After all, it never hurts to ask. Before knowing whetzu sich or leid your boss will give you a raise or promotion, you need to figure out how to ask first. Now, youve followed all the necessary steps and youve asked for the promotion or the raise you believe you deserve. Your manager calls you in to talk and youre met with a shake of the head Sorry, no. Whatever you do, dont panic. Yes, this response will feel like a punch to your soul and a hit to your delicate ego. You might feel disappointment, frustration, and even anger.Yet, its importa nt to keep yourself together and to recognize that this is a crucial time in your career.Rather than storming out of your managers office, take these proactive steps to help you qualify for that promotion or raise in the future.1. Thank your managerTake a minute to process what just happened and then swallow your pride. Now, genuinely thank your manager for taking the time to consider your request. After receiving the disappointing news, this wont be the easiest thing to say, but its an important gesture thatll likely mean a lot to them.2. Ask for feedbackAlthough you might want to leave the room as soon as possible, stick around and ask your manager for feedback. This might add some salt to the already gaping wound, but soliciting feedback will show your manager that youre forward-thinking youre ready to continue to grow and work even harder.Make sure the feedback is concrete and that you can tischset actionable goals to overcome any setbacks. If he or she says you need to do bette r work, push for some details. What specific areas need more attention? What are some examples of ways you can improve?3. Map out a planAfter leaving the meeting, try not to dwell on the negative news. Maybe you deserve a bar of chocolate or a glass of wine, but then its time to take proactive steps toward that promotion or raise youre after. With your managers feedback, map out a plan for yourself. This doesnt need to be a five-year plan. Rather, set some short-term goals you can accomplish within several months. What can you focus on improving? Are there any additional tasks you can add to your workload? How can you prove youre capable and qualified? When setting goals, try following the SMART method Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely. Setting realistic, specific goals is important, especially when you know exactly what you want your next step to be.4. Keep tabs on your winsTheres no need to document your every move, but try starting a brag book. This might be a small notebook you keep in your desk drawer or a Google document. Its up to you it doesnt need to be pretty. In your brag book, start logging your wins. Here are a few examples You completed a big project well before deadline, you received positive feedback from a client, you organized a new research committee, you recognized a problem and solved it before anyone noticed it was a problem. Note that these examples are vague. Youll want to include a few more details to help quantify your successes.Make an effort to add to your brag book each month or even each week. When it comes time to be considered for a promotion or raise again, revisit your brag book to remind yourself of your accomplishments.5. Stay focused on yourselfIts way too easy to start comparing yourself to your co-workers. How does Jack have a senior title when hes late to work every single day? Why did Jill get the promotion when you clearly complete more assignments than her? This, however, leads to rabbit holes of ange r, frustration, and feelings of helplessness. After getting denied a promotion or raise, the only person you should focus on is yourself. If you need, lie low for a few days and simmer down. Whatever you do though, stay focused on yourself and your performance. Analyzing co-workers actions will be counterproductive.6. Give yourself a pat on the backSeriously you deserve a pat on the back. It took courage to ask for that promotion or raise, but you did it and at least now you arent left in the dark. Instead, youve spent time taking a good look at your job and your performance and youve created clear steps to help you achieve your goals.Try not to sweat it. Sure, it might feel slightly awkward when you bump into your manager at the coffee maker the next morning, but offer a smile to let them know its fine and that youre moving forward.7. Remember you have optionsYou should never quit a job because you were denied a promotion or raise. In fact, thats definitely the wrong reason to qui t your job.But sometimes this punch to the gut will lead to clarity (albeit not immediately). Maybe youd thrive better in a different work environment or in a different position altogether. There are always more opportunities out there, and sometimes thats a nice thing to keep in mind.Click on the following link for more advice on how to get ahead. If looking for another job is the right option for you, spruce up your resume with a free resume critique from TopResume.Recommended ReadingBuilding Your Case 7 Steps to Asking for That Raise5 Guaranteed Strategies to Getting a RaiseHow to Negotiate a Raise at Work Like Amy Schumer

How to Get Your Cover Letter and Resume into the Right Hands

How to Get Your Cover Letter and Resume into the Right HandsHow to Get Your Cover Letter and Resume into the Right HandsIm a software engineer and had several great jobs at top tech companies, but that welchesnt always the case. At one time, I was just like the tens of thousands of other software engineering job seekers- sending out resumes galore to company sites, recruiters, job sites, and any other place I could think of- without any success. Id excelled in college, but that didnt seem to make much difference during my job search. There were tons of young people just like me searching for jobs in software engineering. I needed ways to stand out and get my cover letter and resume into the hands of people who would be able to offer me a job. After talking with one of my college professors, software engineers, and my fellow students, I discovered a few great strategies.A software engineer Id met via networking at LinkedIn told me that he landed a job at Microsoft as a result of an in formation bewerbungsinterview he had with a software engineering manager. He said that although the goal of an information interview is elend to find a job, it can also serve as a great way to make an impression with a potential employer. So thats what I did. I contacted several engineering managers at top tech companies, and a few agreed to participate in an information interview. I spent hours preparing a list of questions to ask and researching the companies. The interviewees were impressed with my preparation and interest. One even asked for my resume and told me that she would keep me in mind if an entry-level position opened. A few months later, a job opened, and, after going through a demanding round of interviews, I had my first position in the industry. One of my college professors also gave me some great advice. He told me to get involved in the startup community in my town to make contacts with people who make hiring decisions. I began attending industry meetups, tech talk s by local startups, and networking events sponsored by local tech companies and professional organizations. I even competed in hackathons. People began recognizing me, and I began to build relationships with software engineers, entrepreneurs, engineering managers, and recruiters. I eventually mentioned that I was in the job market, and some of the software engineers told me about companies that were hiring and gave me the names of good contacts at the company. One entrepreneur asked to see my resume, and then asked me to interview for a job at his startup. These efforts paid off, landing me my current job. Despite loving my job, I continue to stay active in the startup community. Its a fun scene and a great way to make friends and learn about industry trends and potential job leads. Finally, social media is a great way to get your resume to the right person. I used LinkedIn to reach out to current and former employees at my target company to ask how they got their resumes past scree ning software. I also connected with engineering managers to learn more about job opportunities at their companies. I even became friends with a few people. They lived in my town, and wed attended the same college. Eventually, when I thought about looking for a new job, they provided me with the names of recruiters at their companies. One of these leads led to a job.The best advice I can give to job seekers is to focus on making personal connections in the industry, rather than just sending out your resume blindly to employment and company sites. By becoming active in the tech community and meeting people one-on-one, youll establish real relationships that often lead to a job.The above post was excerpted from the new Vault Guide to Social Media, Second Edition.

Introvert Sales and Extrovert Sales

Introvert Sales and Extrovert SalesIntrovert Sales and Extrovert SalesAnyone, regardless of personality type, has the potential to be a good saleperson. But knowing your personality type can help you to succeed in sales because it will show you the areas in which you probably need to improve. While there are plenty of personality typing systems, most agree that the two basic personality types are the introvert and the extrovert. What Are Introverts and Extroverts? The most basic definition of ansicht two personality types is that extroverts focus whats outside their heads while introverts focus on whats inside. As a result, extroverts tend to enjoy socializing, have lots of friends, and tend to be strong talkers. Introverts are usually more comfortable being alone rather than surrounded by people, they prefer to have a few very close friends, and they generally listen more than they talk. How Does Introversion and Extroversion Affect Sales? Extroverts are more likely to go in to sales because their personality is a close match to what most people imagine when they think of salespeople. Actually, while introverts are not as commonly found in sales positions, they tend to do better on average than the extroverts. Introverts have an advantage in sales precisely because theyre more inclined to listen. A salesperson who listens to what the prospect has to say is far better armed to come up with the perfect proposal that the salesperson who speaks compellingly but doesnt pay much attention to what the prospect is saying. Extroverts need to remember that the focus of a sales presentation is not on them it belongs to the prospect and his needs. An extrovert who can learn to listen effectively will find that his sales will improve considerably. Note that listening effectively is not the same as sitting quietly while the prospect talks. Just giving the prospect a chance to speak isnt enough if the whole time you speaking, youre just thinking about what youre going to say next. On the other hand, extroverts tend to have an easier time connecting with and building rapport with prospects. They also tend to be good at keeping control of the sales process, and they dont mind spending a lot of time on the phone making cold calls and the like. Introverts usually have greatlistening skills but have a somewhat tougher time connecting with prospects and customers on an emotional level. Its important for introverts to study and master strong body language. Making eye contact, holding yourself in a powerful posture, and showing interest by nodding and leaning forward as a prospect speaks are all good body language for salespeople. Introverts may also have more trouble being assertive than extroverts, so making cold calls and asking for the close can be a big challenge for them. Where introverts really shine is collecting all the data that prospects let drop and plugging that information into a sales pitch thats guaranteed to appeal. Introverts can be re ally patient with prospects who go on and on and on because they know that the more the prospect talks, the more effective the final pitch will be. The introvert and extrovert personality types are actually a kind of spectrum. Extreme extroverts fall on one end, extreme introverts on the other, and most people end up somewhere in between. Ideally, youll want to move somewhere into the middle of the spectrum. Both extreme extroverts and extreme introverts will struggle in sales, in different ways. But the salesperson who can incorporate the best of both personality types will thrive.

Fracking with Less Water

Fracking with Less Water Fracking with Less Water Fracturing with Less WaterHydraulic fracturing is a booming success story, the tool to collecting millions of barrels of oil and cubic feet of natural gas from seemingly untappable underground formations. Its practice has upset global markets and boosted U.S energy production to levels not seen in decades. But its future is not guaranteed. New York state officials have banned the practice, and others are investigating its kompetenzprofil to produce seismic eventsearthquakesand other associated environmental risks.Fracking, as it often is called, is a thirsty process, each well consuming between three million and six million gallons of water, most of which becomes unusable and must be trucked for disposal, generally in deep injection wells. Reducing the volume of water needed or reusing it could reduce the industrial footprint of a well, along with costs, potentially making it more palatable to critics. There are several research proje cts attempting to find cost-effective treatment methods, but at Ohio Universitys Russ College of Engineering and Technology, one mechanical engineering hochschulprofessor is moving into the second stage of a research effort targeting the treatment and onsite reuse of fracking water.Reducing the VolumeHydraulic fracturing uses water pumped into a well at very high pressure to shatter underground shale formations and release the hydrocarbons trapped within. Most of the water is recovered, but on its way back to the surface the backflow picks up the chemicals used in the fracking process along with high concentrations of salts, often in concentrations up to 192,000 parts per million. Seawater, for comparison, has a salinity of about 35,000 ppm. The salinity levels are too high to be reused in fracking, so the wastewater has to be trucked for disposal, generally in injection wells.Richard Tumbleson, a sophomore chemical and biomolecular engineering major, analyzes a flowback water sampl e in the lab. Image Jill Bateman / Ohio UniversityTheres two types of water, says Jason Trembly. The flowback water is generally similar in chemistry to the fluid that stimulates the well. Most of that water can be reused after filtering out the solids. We are focused on the produced water that has been trapped within the shale seams. That takes on the characteristics of the shale itself.Trembly is developing a two-step process The first uses off-the-shelf filtering technology to gather suspended solids coupled with ultraviolet water treatment to handle bacteria and water softening systems to remove hard water ions The second puts the flow through a reactor fueled by field gas, under high pressure and high temperatures, where it is brought to a supercritical condition.Thats where the novelty lies, says Trembly. Thats where the behavior of the water changes.SupercriticalAt the supercritical state, water takes on the properties of both flssig and gas. Salts and hydrocarbons either pre cipitate out as solids or gasify into hydrogen. The salts can be reclaimed for uses such as road de-icing and the hydrogen returned to help power the reactor.Supercriticality is nothing new, Trembly acknowledges. Whats different is the novel reactor design. It will have a small footprint and a high throughput.Trembly says he is working toward a commercial application of 100 gallons per minute with a reactor and associated equipment that can be fit onto a flatbed truck for mobile application. Colleagues at Ohio Universitys Institute for Corrosion and Multiphase Technology are researching materials with which to build the reactor, taking into account high temperatures, pressure and the highly corrosive brine.Trembly says the project was spurred in part by local needs. Although there are not any wells being fracked in southeast Ohios Athens County, where the university is located, he notes there are many injection wells being used to dispose fracking wastewater. I want to focus my rese arch in areas where both industry and societal needs overlap, he says.Electrodialysis can provide cost-effective treatment of salty water from fracked wells. Source MITNew ApplicationsElswehere, Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers believe electrodialysis shows promise in accomplishing the same goal. The process isnt new, developed over 50 years ago to desalinate brackish water or seawater, or for food processing and other uses. But it has not been used with waters of such high salinity, according the researchers. The team found electrodialysis actually works better with higher salt concentrations because water conducts electricity better at higher concentrations. By desalinating the water in stages and to levels that fall short of potable standards but enough to be reused for fracking, they believe electrodialysis has the potential to reduce costs and minimize disposal of contaminated water. Engineers still must determine the most effective level of salinity for frackin g, say the researchers. Some private firms are attacking the problem from another direction, developing waterless fracturing technology. Calgary-based GasFrac is working in drought-ridden Texas using a system that substitutes propane for water. The closed-loop system sends propane gel into the formations along with proppant, small sand particles that are forced into cracks to hold them open so gas can flow out. The gel reverts to vapor within the underground formation and returns to the surface along with the natural gas. Although initial capital costs are higher and there are increased risks for explosion, the company says drilling chemicals remain below ground and operators can recover up to 25% more product.Chevron reportedly is testing the companys process at five natural gas wells in Colorado. In Ohio, one driller is now using it in an attempt to recover oil in the Utica formation. Hydraulic fracturing for oil has had limited success in the Utica where water is retained undergro und, swelling the formation and blocking water and oil recovery.Learn more at the ASME Hydraulic Fracturing Conference 2015. For Further Discussion Supercriticality is nothing new. Whats different is the novel reactor design. It will have a small footprint and a high throughput.Prof. Jason Trembley, Ohio University

3 Top Tips for Empowering Your Teams

3 Top Tips for Empowering Your Teams3 Top Tips for Empowering Your Teams Scaling organizations requires careful attention to a companys core principals and the way their teams work. Unfortunately, all too often, as organizations grow, departments begin to operate in silos and are plagued by inefficiencies that kill morale and grind product delivery to a halt. From past experience, Ive learned that the key to achieving next-level delivery velocity is an environment in whichempoweredemployees thrive, and that requires leadership focus across three key areas.Leverage lean and agile methodologies to remove organizational barriers that result in waste. Establish small teams with ownership and accountability from idea to delivery. Encourage teams to leverage the best technology and processes to maximize delivery of value to the business - avoid one-size-fits-all models that cater to the average and give teams access to tools and resources they need to succeed.Embrace rapid learning through shorter cycles and continuous delivery pipelines. Encourage teams to identify impediments and allow for time and assistance to get them resolved. Leverage the aggregation of marginal gains to receive exponential returns with wenigstens investment.Establish mechanisms for transparency of the portfolio, risks and alignment to ensure that teams are optimizing for the throughput of the system and not any one individual part. Minimize short-termactions that impact long-term velocity and tackle technical debt that has the potential to expand. Measure everything and establish a core set of KPIs that drive to the largest gains in velocity. When done right, operating at internet scale can create an environment where groups of critical thinkers start each and every day excited about working together to make the world a better place for themselves and their customers. As VP of Engineering, Andrew is responsible for the delivery of the core services powering SilverRail s travel technology. This is what happens when you have psychopaths in your office

This is what happens when you have psychopaths in your officeThis is what happens when you have psychopaths in your officeA study of undergrad students conducted by Victoria University of Wellington and The University of Southampton in the United Kingdom attempts to better understand the effect psychopathic traits has on work culture and employee interaction.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and morePsychopaths and shared goalsThe researchers began by administering personality tests to participants in order to determine the extent of psychopathy expressed by each individual. The test was based on traits like lack of empathy, tendency to blame others and desire for power. Respondents that scored in the top 25% were deemed to be highly psychopathic. After analyzing the students results, they placed them into groups. Some groups had a disproportionate number of psychopaths, some groups were c omprised of 20% psychopaths, some groups had an equal number of non-psychopaths and psychopaths and one had no psychopaths at all. Each group was tasked with playing 50 rounds of a prisoners dilemma game, wherein members had to decide to work toward a shared goal or betray their teammates to help themselves.Psychopaths arent the best collaboratorsNot surprisingly the results proved groups with a higher concentration of psychopaths were less likely to effectively cooperate with each other although groups with no psychopaths and only a few psychopaths performed about the same. 5 Things to Cut From Your Cover Letter Now

5 Things to Cut From Your Cover Letter Now 5 Things to Cut From Your Cover Letter Now If you want recruiters to read your resume, then youll need an enticing cover letter to convince them. Your cover letter is your introduction to a new recruiter or hiring manager, and it  can be the difference between a potential employer opening your resume or clicking delete. The aim of  a cover letter is simple: to persuade a recruiter to give your resume a chance. Unfortunately, many job seekers cover letters fail to do just that. Whats holding your cover letter back? It could be one of these five things - which you should cut immediately: 1. Dear Sir/Madam A generic, non-personal introduction evidences your lack of research. By starting your cover letter with Dear Sir/Madam, you give recruiters the message that youre sending the same blanket emails to everyone. Instead, you need to take time to personalize your cover letter. Use the name of the recruiter or HR rep you are contacting. This will create an immediate connection, making your recipient much more likely to keep reading. Lack of information is no excuse. If the contacts name is not included in the job advertisement, a quick search on LinkedIn should be enough to uncover  it. 2. The Extra 500 Words Having a lot to say is fantastic - but save it for the interview, not your cover letter. Your cover letter is best thought of as a quick, concise note. Recruiters are busy. They do not have time to read an essay on why you are the ideal candidate.  Just a couple of punchy paragraphs will quickly get the message across and persuade a recruiter to open your resume. 3. The Separate Attachment You have to send your resume as a separate attachment. Thats the only way to preserve the format. However, theres no need to make a recruiter open two separate attachments. Instead,  your cover letter should  have pride of place in the body of  your email. Not only does this save the recruiter the hassle of toggling back and forth between multiple attachments, but it is also much more effective. A blank email - or one simply stating Please find attached my cover letter and resume - hardly entices  anyone to keep reading. 4. Granular Detail Your cover letter should not repeat your resume; it should only lead recruiters to your resume. Remember, you only have a few paragraphs to capture and keep a recruiters attention. Theres no room in your cover letter for the granular details of your employment history and skill set. Besides, that information is already in your resume. Approach your cover letter as a high-level summary. Give just enough information to make the recruiter  eager to learn more. 5. The  Formal Tone Recruiters want to know that your skills and experience are up to snuff, but they also want to ensure you are the right fit for the organization. Most recruiters are looking for an approachable and personable human being. If your cover letter is rigorously formal, you may come across as cold and uncaring. Instead, use a warm, friendly tone to convey a bit of personality. Give recruiters the sense that you are someone theyd enjoy chatting with. Accounting Certifications That Can Boost Your Income

Accounting Certifications That Can Boost Your Income Accounting Certifications That Can Boost Your Income Accounting certifications are among the most beneficial professional credentials you can list on your resume.   Certifications demonstrate competence in your area of the finance and accounting industry, make you a more desirable candidate for open positions and improve your salary potential. Current and prospective employers want professionals to have these designations, but you have to think critically when deciding which of the many accounting certifications is best for your career path.   Certain certifications create opportunities for a variety of positions, while others are geared toward highly specialized roles. Deciding between these options depends  on your interests, skills and the flexibility of your career goals. Here are three examples of widely applicable accounting certifications and three examples of more specialized designations:     Certified Public Accountant (CPA)   The CPA license has long been one of the most popular certifications.  You are awarded this designation  following the successful completion of education hours, work experience and a comprehensive exam,  which denotes your skills in compliance, forensic accounting and other areas. CPAs may be involved in auditing, management consulting, management accounting, financial accounting and reporting, and many other areas.     Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA)   The CGMA license is a globally recognized certification for management accountants. It has been offered since 2012, and the requirements for this certification depend on which of the two sponsoring institutions - the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) or Charted Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) - you belong to. Members of the latter organization automatically qualify, but members of the AICPA have additional requirements.     Certified Management Accountant (CMA)   Like the CPA designation, the CMA license affords more flexibility than some other accounting certifications. This globally recognized license is earned by accounting professionals demonstrating competency in strategic assessment, budgeting and other skills. CMAs may find themselves working in staff accounting, joint interest accounting, finance management or other areas.     Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA)   The CISA license is among the more specialized accounting certifications. Accountants who receive this designation from the Information Systems Audit and Control Association are skilled in information systems control, auditing and security.     Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE)   CFEs focus their career on tasks related to fraud, including identification, prevention and investigation. As instances of fraud increase and companies become more susceptible, demand for CFEs has risen.     Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA)   The CFA designation is another targeted license among accounting certifications. CFAs are involved in investment analysis and portfolio management. The exam for this certification comprises three levels relating to topics such as ethics, economics and money management. They must be completed sequentially before the CFA license can be earned. CFAs are globally recognized, and earning this certification specifically enhances the skills used by portfolio managers. Some CFAs also become research analysts or consultants.

Job Promotion Interview Questions

Job Promotion Interview Questions Job Promotion Interview Questions When youre interviewing for a newly opened, vertical position or for an internal job promotion with your current employer, many of the questions you will be asked are standard interview questions that all candidates are expected to answer. Be Prepared to Demonstrate Why You're a More Desirable Candidate If a vertical position on the career ladder at your company opens, find out from your Human Resources department whether management plans to fill the position internally, or whether they plan to seek outside job candidates. If the latter, then you need to be prepared to demonstrate how your history with the employer makes you a more desirable candidate than someone they might recruit from outside. If, on the other hand, it is clear that the job will be filled internally, then your challenge will be to persuade the hiring committee that you are the most qualified of your peers for this job promotion. It will take some finesse â€" while you definitely will want to highlight your contributions, be careful not to throw your colleagues “under the bus” in an interview. You’ll still have to work with these individuals â€" and possibly even manage them â€" if you land the job promotion, so be careful how you answer any questions which ask you to compare yourself to others in line for promotion. Keep in mind that you are not trying to prove that you are “better” than other candidates â€" you are trying to prove how your own unique experience with the employer and your professional competency has made you the best person to assume the responsibilities that come with promotion. Share Examples Take some time to think, before the interview, about specific examples you can use to show (rather than just tell) how you would be the employer’s ideal choice for a coveted promotion. There are some things, of course, that are obvious strengths â€" a solid length of tenure or a continuing record of outstanding annual work evaluations, for example. It’s also good to think of specific instances where you’ve demonstrated the team leadership, “out of the box” thinking, project coordination, or people management skills that you will need in your new role after a job promotion. The big day has arrived, and you’re ready to shine in front of the interviewing committee. When interviewing for a job promotion, here are the specific questions related to the company, your role within the company, and the job you are applying for that you can expect to be asked. Job Promotion Interview Questions What do you like best about your current position at the company? What was your biggest success story in XYZ department? Why do you want to leave your current job?Can you tell me what you know about the position you are being considered for? How about our team? Why do you want the new position? Why should we consider you for this promotion? If we were to ask the folks in your department to describe you, which adjectives would they use?Are you the best candidate for promotion? Why?What training will you need to be successful in this position? How will you handle it if you dont get the promotion? How, if we promoted you, would you deal with others of your colleagues who have been passed up for promotion? If you were promoted, when would you expect your next promotion? If you were promoted, what would you seek to accomplish in your first three months in this role? How to Prepare Most likely, you can skip company research prior to an internal job interview since youre already familiar with it. However, that does not mean this interview will be easy. Dont assume youll get the promotion simply because you are a current employee. Here are tips to help you perform well during a job promotion interview:   Use Your Insider Advantage When You Respond Remember, you already work for the company. Differentiate yourself from the competition when you are competing with external candidates by mentioning your company-specific experience, knowledge, and skills when you answer the interview questions. Its also important to give examples of successful accomplishments and projects, the goals youve met, and your achievements in your current position.   Don't Fail to Prepare Its easy to feel over-confident with an internal interview. But you should still take the time to review the standard interview questions that you will most likely be asked. You should also bring a copy of your resume to the interview and be prepared to speak about your complete job history. Dress for Success You do not necessarily have to wear your typical interview outfit, but do make sure to dress professionally. Heres a good rule of thumb: Dress to match what the people interviewing you typically wear to the office.   Make a Good Impression The interview isnt your only opportunity to make a case for your candidacy. Unlike other people interviewing for the position, you can prove yourself on the job. Be a model employee during the weeks when your company is interviewing candidates. Show off your abilities and skills (and also make sure not to come in late!).   Write a Thank You Letter Yes, you should still write a thank you letter, even though the interview was internal. First, whether you get the promotion or not, its nice to be considered, and thats worthy of a thank you. And, as with any interview-related thank you note, your letter is an opportunity to sell your candidacy and highlight any important points you neglected to mention during the interview.

Marine Corps Customs and Traditions

Marine Corps Customs and Traditions Marine Corps Customs and Traditions In the Marine Corps, practically every custom has grown out of the manner in which Marines of the past conducted themselves as well as present Marines honoring Marine heroes of yesterday. Many Marine customs have been incorporated into regulations in order to standardize conduct throughout the Corps, but some of them cannot be found in written directives. Knowing and observing these customs, both written and unwritten, is important to each Marine because it keeps him mindful of the heritage and traditions of his Corps, and of his duty to uphold them. In addition, it makes him feel that he is a part of the team and helps to create the strong bond of loyalty between him and all other Marines that has become a distinguishing mark of the Corps. When you think Marine Corps, you may think of the night in Tun Tavern in 1775 where the first recruitment drive for Marines began in Philadelphia prior to the Revolutionary War. You may think of the terms Jarhead, Leatherneck,, or Devil Dogs, but The Few, The Proud are best known for Semper Fi (always faithful) and being the First to Fight in more than 300 beach landings throughout the 250 year history. Ooh-Rah! Marine Corps Birthday One of the most famous Marine customs is the observance of the Marine Corps Birthday. Since 1921 the birthday of the Marine Corps has been officially celebrated each year on 10 November, since it was on this date in 1775 that Continental Congress resolved, That two Battalions of Marines be raised.... Over the years the Marine Corps Birthday has been celebrated in a wide variety of ways, depending on the location and circumstances of the Marine units. The celebration involves the reading of an excerpt from the Marine Corps Manual and a birthday message from the Commandant; the cutting of a birthday cake by the commanding officer; and the presentation of the first and second pieces of cake to the oldest and youngest Marines present. Salutes Some of the most important customs of all are those of military courtesy. In the Marine Corps, courtesy is an expression of respect for the authority possessed by an individual, as well as a demonstration of respect for the Corps as a whole. Through the use of the various forms of military courtesy a Marine says, in effect, As brothers in arms and fellow Marines, I consider you worthy of my respect. When used in this manner, military courtesy assumes one of its most important roles; it is an expression of the respect a Marine has for other Marines and for himself. Of all the forms of military courtesy, the various salutes are probably the most important. They are certainly the most obvious and frequently used. Saluting is the traditional form of greeting between men of the profession of arms and it is an honored tradition of military organizations throughout the world. Marines in uniform salute officers (or senior officers), even if that officer is in civilian clothes (assuming the Marine recognizes the individual as an officer). Conversely, its not considered appropriate for a Marine in  civilian clothes  to initiate a salute to an officer (or senior officer), even if that officer is in uniform. During the playing of the National Anthem, at morning and evening colors, and at funerals, if in civilian dress, Marines uncover and hold the hat over the left breast at such times as those in uniform salute. Many stand at attention when in civilian clothes as well when hearing the National Anthem or the Marines Hymn. Miscellaneous There are many other customs which have significance in the life of a Marine. A few of the notable ones are listed here. Boarding a small boat or entering a car. When boarding a small boat or entering a car, Juniors enter first and take up the seats or the space beginning forward, leaving the most desirable seat for the senior. Seniors enter last and leave first.Serenading the Commandant. Commencing with the last New Years Day of the Civil War, on the morning of 1 January of each year the Marine Band serenades the Commandant of the Marine Corps at his quarters and received hot buttered rum and breakfast in return. Wetting Down Parties. Whenever an officer is promoted, he customarily holds a wetting down  party. At this time the new commission is said to be wet down. When several officers are promoted at the same time, they frequently have a single wetting down party.Wishes of Commanding Officer. When the commanding officer of a Marines says, I wish or I desire, these expressions have the force of a direct order and should be acted upon as if he had given a direct order.Looking Out for Your Men. One feature which has made the Marine Corps such a respected organization is the custom of Marine leaders looking out for their men. A Marine leader makes sure his men are comfortably clothed, housed, and justly treated. For example, in the  field,  a Marine officer takes  position  in the mess line after all the enlisted men in order to ensure all men get their food. A Marine leader never leaves a wounded or dead Marine on the battlefield to fall into the hands of the enemy. Being a Marine.  But the most outstanding custom in the Marine Corps is simply being a Marine and all that it implies. Call it morale, call it esprit de corps, call it what you willit is that pride which sets a  United States Marine  apart from the men of other armed services. It is not taught in manuals, yet it is the most impressive lesson a recruit learns in  boot camp. It is not tangible, yet it has won fights against material odds. Some Classic Quotes About Marines Senator Paul H. Douglas stated: Those of us who have had the privilege of serving in the Marine Corps value our experience as among the most precious of our lives. The fellowship of shared hardships and dangers in a worthy cause creates a close bond of comradeship. It is the basic reason for the cohesiveness of Marines and for the pride we have in our corps and our loyalty to each other. A Marine is proud of his Corps and believes it to be second to none. He is loyal to his comrades and to the Marine Corps, adhering always to the motto Semper Fidelis (Always Faithful). Marine have garnered respect from other members in our military and special operations communities as well as the foreign fighters: Navy SEAL Chris Kyle stated, In my experience, Marines are gung ho no matter what. They will all fight to the death. Every one of them just wants to get out there and kill. They are bad-ass, hard-charging mothers. RAdm. J. R.Stark stated: Marines I see as two breeds, Rottweiler’s or Doberman’s, because Marines come in two varieties, big and mean, or skinny and mean. Theyre aggressive on the attack and tenacious on defense. Theyve got really short hair and they always go for the throat. Gen. William Thornson, U.S. Army stated: There are only two kinds of people that understand Marines: Marines and the enemy. Everyone else has a second-hand opinion.General James F. Amos stated: “Once a Marine, always a Marine.” The title is permanent. Do not use former Marine, as it implies no longer a Marine. Youre a Marine, just in a different uniform and youre in a different phase of your life. But youll always be a Marine because you went to Parris Island, San Diego or the hills of Quantico. Theres no such thing as a former Marine. In closing, as the day ends for the Marine recruit attending USMC boot camp, the final words out of the recruits mouth are, Good Night Chesty Puller - wherever you are

Your Resume Is Ready for the Attic

Your Resume Is Ready for the Attic Your Resume Is Ready for the Attic Does your resume include an objective statement, fax number, a “typewriter” font or “references are available upon request”? If so, your job search is full of outdated furniture.I recently posted a picture on Facebook of myself as a kid sitting in my living room. I love this picture because it reminds me what my house looked like as a child, and it’s a window into home-décor trends of the era. My mother had a penchant for plastic slipcovers, and she put them on everything in the living room, including the lampshades. Plastic slipcovers made their debut in the mid-’50s and managed to haunt my family through the next two decades. My friends and I have been chuckling over the picture and trying to figure out why anyone would subject their loved ones to the feel of sticky plastic, especially in the summertime. But when my mom had plastic slipcovers it was all the rage, and many of my friends tell stories of “growing up plastic” as well. Of course now when we think about p lastic slipcovers we immediately conjure up a “dated” image. It’s easy to figure out that your furniture is out of style because you have to look at it every day; you’re constantly comparing it to other people’s furniture and the trends you see in the media. But what about your resume? Many people don’t look at their resume or update it for years and years because they don’t see the need. And when they do need their resume for something, what do they do? They pull out the old one and just add the new job. No redecorating here.So what people end up with is basically the same resume they wrote 20 years ago - kind of like outdated plastic slipcovers. Here are some telltale signs that your resume needs to be “redecorated”: Your resume leads with an objective statement. No one wants to see an objective statement on a resume anymore. They communicate what you are looking for, which isn’t of much interest to a hiring manager. Hiring authorities want to know what’s in it for them. Do you have the competencies and the proof of performance to help solve their business problems? Solution: Create a profile or executive summary that outlines your big-picture accomplishments and the value you can bring to an employer. Leave the objective off the resume and in the past where it belongs. Your contact information includes a fax number. Nothing screams “1980s” like a fax number. Chances are no employer will need to contact you by fax. Solution: Omit the fax number; better yet, use that space to include the URL for your Web site or LinkedIn profile. Your dates of employment are all left justified. Having dates of employment to the left made sense in the days of the typewriter when tabs were the only way to indent content. Thanks to Microsoft Word, text is much more malleable, and space can be better utilized. Solution: Place employment dates after the company name or to the right to optimize space and save room for other important content. The font on your resume is Courier 10. Courier 10 was all there was when all documents were created on typewriters. Now we have scores of choices. Solution: Choose a new font. Your resume contains several personal attributes to describe you. If you are using adjectives on your resume such as “loyal,” “detail-oriented,” “good communicator” or “hard-working” to describe your value to an employer, stop. Descriptions of personal attributes are meaningless unless there is tangible proof of these traits within the body of the resume. Their use is very old-school, and my guess is you copied those words from someone else’s outdated resume or from a book of resume samples that was published during President Clinton’s first administration. Solution: Omit adjectives describing your personal attributes and focus on evidence of your accomplishments and key business value. “References are available upon request.” Well, they used to be. Now many hiring managers Google candidates before they call them in for an interview. That means your references are often available online whether you want them to be or not. Solution: Ditch the statement about references and save the space for something more important. There are furniture trends, fashion trends, and even resume-writing trends. Stay current and informed about the latest resume-writing styles and tips to increase the likelihood of getting noticed by hiring managers.
